Less Is More

Using less water means more water in our rivers and reservoirs.  Our pristine water supplies, wildlife habitats, and world-class recreational activities in Lake Mendocino, in Lake Sonoma, and on the Russian River rely on our ability to use less water.

Lake Mendocino and Lake Sonoma provide a majority of the water for our supply system. The Sonoma County Water Agency (SCWA) operates the Russian River water supply system by pumping naturally filtered water from the ground near the Russian River in Forestville. The water is treated and then distributed to its contractors, including the cities of Santa Rosa, Petaluma, Rohnert Park, Sonoma, and Cotati; the Town of Windsor; and the Marin Municipal Water District, North Marin Water District, and Valley of the Moon Water District.

Using less water means more water for our diverse environment. The Russian River watershed is home to three species listed as threatened under the Federal Endangered Species Act: steelhead, Chinook salmon, and coho salmon. The Sonoma County Water Agency and its water contractors are working diligently to improve habitat for these species. Now you can help by simply using less water in your yard and fixing any leaks in your irrigation system.

Using less water also means more time in our beautiful waterways to swim, canoe, kayak, or boat. Our reservoirs are used not only for water supply and flood protection but also for prime recreational activities. Lake Mendocino and Lake Sonoma offer an array of recreational activities along with scenic picnic and camping sites. The Russian River alone can keep outdoor enthusiasts occupied for the entire summer with its meandering waterways and sandy beaches. By using less water, you can contribute to the Russian River’s bountiful recreational opportunities.

SCWA encourages residents, businesses and the agricultural community to take part in its efforts to use less water this summer.

Follow these top ten water conservation tips:

• Reduce irrigation by one day a week.

• Find and repair leaks now.

• Inspect and tune up your irrigation system monthly.

• Irrigate between midnight and 6 a.m. to reduce water loss from evaporation and wind.

• Use a broom, not a hose, to clean your driveway, deck, or patio.

• Use a bucket and a hose with an automatic shut-off nozzle when you wash the car, or take your car to a carwash that recycles.

• Cover pools and hot tubs to reduce evaporation.

• Use front-loading washing machines.

• Run the dishwasher and the clothes washer with full loads only.

• Prevent and report water waste.
