Occidental, CA – The Sonoma County Water Agency (SCWA), which operates the Occidental County Sanitation District’s (OCSD) Wastewater Treatment Facility, has released an environmental analysis of a proposed project to transport the OCSD’s wastewater to the Airport-Larkfield-Wikiup Sanitation Zone wastewater treatment plant. The 30-day public comment period opens on September 29, 2017.

The proposed project would make minor modifications to existing facilities, and would allow wastewater to be transported from the OCSD facility to the Airport-Larkfield-Wikiup Sanitation Zone Wastewater Treatment Facility. The Initial Study and Negative Declaration (IS/ND) was prepared in compliance with the California Environmental Quality Act.

Currently, the OCSD discharges treated wastewater into a pond located at the headwaters of Dutch Bill Creek during the summer and to Dutch Bill Creek during the winter. Dutch Bill Creek provides habitat for endangered coho salmon. An order by the North Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board requires the OCSD to stop discharging treated wastewater into the pond by 2018.

“The release of the environmental review is an important step in helping to protect Dutch Bill Creek and protect our water quality,” said Water Agency Director Lynda Hopkins. “We appreciate the community’s ongoing support and interest, and we hope that interested stakeholders will continue to participate in the public process by reviewing the environmental documents.”

The IS/ND was prepared in compliance with the California Environmental Quality Act, and found that the project has minimal environmental impacts. Copies of the IS/ND can be found online at or at the following locations:

    • Occidental Library: 73 Main Street, Occidental, CA 95465
