Sonoma County Local Governments Electric Vehicle Partnership
The County of Sonoma, the nine cities within the County, Northern Sonoma County Air Pollution Control District, Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District, Sonoma County Transportation Authority, and the Sonoma County Water Agency (Water Agency) have been working together to build out an electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure to support mass introduction of EVs in 2011. This effort has united the local government agencies to work together to facilitate public and private EV ownership in the County. A number of state and federal grants have been pursued to help fund this effort. Additional partnership opportunities are continually sought after to help bring about EV infrastructures at schools, private businesses, and commercial centers.
With many major car manufacturers launching EVs in 2011, the goal of this partnership is to position Sonoma County to be ready for this mass EV introduction and to promote the use of at least 1,000 EVs in the County by early 2011. Locations in every city and in many unincorporated areas have been identified for construction of charging stations. Additionally, a number of private companies and educational institutions have expressed interest in participating in this infrastructure build out on their properties. Facilities with large solar systems are particularly well-placed for electric charging stations for fleet, employee and public use.
